Usefulness of ccg and electronystagmographic abnormalities in patients
Abstract
As a part of a full-range evaluation of patients with panic disease an
instrumental examination of statokinetic test has been performed. At
40% of the patients pathological changes have been registered in the
craniocorpographic or posturographical tests. There were mostly
symptoms of a slight peripheral lesion, in two cases however there
were psychogenic reactions too. In the six otoneurological departments
in Hungary the electronystagmographic examinations have to be carried
out with different types of equipments – however, we took care of the
conformity of the main points of the analyzing process. The
examination of smooth-pursuit eye-movements consisted of the
assessment of optokinetic nystagmus as well as of slow smooth-pursuit
-eye -movements. Abnormalities were found at 30% of the patients,
characterized by phase-shift in smooth pursuit or optokinetic
eye-movement. Spontaneous nystagmus has been registered at the same
number of patients. Fifty-eight % of patients have normal response for
caloric irrigation, while 35 % have hypaesthesia, 7 % have
hyperaesthesia. The directional prepondance could be diagnosed at 54
%, showing dysfunction of the central vestibular system. Fifty-five %
of them complained of increased feeling of discomfort compared with
the normal caloric response and lack of vegetative symptoms. In
summary , we can say, that the results of the statokinetic
examinations were better than previously expected. Except of 9
patients pathological ENG findings could be diagnosed with a
dominating appearance of pathological directional prepondance.
