Translation, cross-cultural adaptation to brazilian portuguese and

Abstract

Objective: to translate, to perform a cross-cultural adaptation and to evaluate the reproducibility and reliability of Dizziness Handicap Inventory (DHI) to Brazilian population. The secondary objectives are to describe the results obtained in the use of the questionnaire and to compare them to vestibular evaluation.
Method: The cross-cultural adaptation of the questionnaire to Portuguese spoken in Brazil followed the steps indicated by Guillemin et al (1993): translation from English language to Portuguese, back-translation to obtain the cross-cultural adaptation and reproducibility. Forty five consecutive patients with dizziness complaint were submitted to the DHI and to vestibular tests. These patients were male and female adults, with ages ranging from 44 to 91 years old. Results: The DHI was translated to Portuguese language. The questionnaire was culturally adapted and the reproducibility and reliability were good. The findings showed that the evaluated population has a major decline in functional aspects. Patients with peripheral vestibular hypofunction presented decrease of their quality of life, in functional aspects.
Conclusion: Brazilian DHI is a safe instrument to be used in Brazilian population.
