Posture in patients with peripheral vestibular syndrome: exploratory study

Abstract

Objectives: To evaluate corporal posture in patients with peripheral vestibular dysfunction, out of crisis. To verify the presence of pain in the muscular system, in cephalic and cervical segments and shoulders. Material and Method: Exploratory study using the modified Kendall protocol of posture evaluation. Eighty-two patients (26 men and 56 women) aged 9 to 84 years were evaluated. Factorial analysis was performed. Results: The most prevalent alterations observed in the corporal posture were found in the superior part of the body, including inclination of the head, one shoulder higher than the other, rotation of the thoracic segment and lumbar deviation in the frontal and the sagital plans. The highest rate of complaint of muscular pain was related to cervical segment, shoulders and lumbar region. Conclusion: The most prevalent corporal posture alterations found in the patients with peripheral vestibular syndromes, out of crisis, were present at the superior part of the body and lumbar region. Muscular pain was found mainly in the cervical segment and shoulders.
